4 Tips For Writing A Successful College Admission Essay
4 Tips For Writing A Successful College Admission Essay Be certain the college or university you're applying to received your essay. Parents can help their child brainstorm topics, encourage them to write multiple drafts, and help him or her meet deadlines. Some parents should not even read their kidâs essays as they want to change too many elements that make the essays lose their unique adolescent voice. The personal statement is your opportunity to reveal something about yourself that canât be found anywhere else in your application â" use it! Many students use this essay to expound upon activities or interests that are already heavily demonstrated in their application through courses, the activity list, and more. Instead of reinforcing a top activity or interest, instead, write about something that reveals another dimension of your life or personality. If your top activity is swimming, donât write about the big championship meet. Find something else that reveals something new and that shows you put a lot of thought into your essay. If your study of AP biology conflicts with your religious views, write about that and how you reconciled the two. Writing the college essay takes time and effort, and you should feel accomplished. When you submit your essay, remember to include your name, contact information, and ID number if your college provided one, especially if you send it to a general admission email account. Nothing is worse than trying to match an application essay with no name (or, worse, an email address such as ) to a file. Make sure to keep copies of what you sent to which schools and whenâ"and follow up on them! The admissions counselors thought the pies were quite tasty but this did not lead to an acceptance. Another student sent a life-size blowup of herself attached to balloons. It was supposed to flyâ¦but alas the balloons didnât work. And yet another student staged a sit-in in an admissions office lobby, refusing to leave until she was able to speak to a few admissions people. I know this is the touchiest of topics, but I always beg parents to believe in their child. And then they are pleasantly surprised when admissions officers write acceptance letters with personal notes about their childâs fabulous essays. A man that she adored but discovered that he was a cocaine addict. She took the reader through the stages of loving, hating, being disappointed, ashamed and finally acceptance, understanding and again loving while âDadâ was going through treatment. She allowed herself to be vulnerable which made the essay dynamite. Another student talked about the struggles of having learning disabilities and the pain that he experienced during his educational career. You might think, âI donât have anything like that.â All of us have experiences that have impacted our lives. Coming up with a good topic for your college admission essays can feel like the ultimate form of writerâs block. After all, what could you possibly write about that will represent you in 500 words or fewer? The creative process definitely isnât easy, but these tips and tricks from students who have been through the process should help you get your thoughts flowing and ideas moving. Check out these five tips for choosing an essay topic to help get you started. Aside from mistakes on the essays, college admissions counselors discuss in âThe Daily Beastâ how one student sent pies, claiming she wasnât a good athlete but she was a good baker. Needless to say, this tactic proved as ineffective as the pies and the blow-up person attached to balloons. Similarly, one topic you should never write about in your college essay is romantic relationships. Itâs hard not to be cliché when writing about young love, and a relationship shouldnât be the main aspect of your life that you want to showcase for college admissions officers. A great college essay gives the college an opportunity to see who you really are. Pick a meaningful experience and take the reader through your process of self-discovery. I have seen too many essays where parents âhelpedâ and as result, the essay lost the studentâs voice. Too many words had been added that just did not reflect the studentâs vocabulary or mode of writing. College admissions readers are bright and intuitive and can tell when an essay has been âhelpedâ too much. I see no problem with parents doing a grammar/spelling check as well as offering suggestions on how an essay could be improved. Just be sure that it still reads like it was written by a 17 year old and it shares the story that is important to them and not just an important sounding topic that a parent thinks would be more impressive . Your college counselors are there to help, but they canât if you donât ask or wait until the last minute to seek guidance and feedback. Make a plan to meet with your college counselor and go over your college list and essays, and ask for feedback on your writing. Your college counselor can provide valuable insight into how to improve your college application essays, so seek feedback on your drafts as soon as possible. School-based counselors have a lot of students to advise and are very busy, so seek guidance early and often.

The Difference Between Performance Of Islamic Banks And...
the difference between performance of Islamic banks and conventional banks before and during financial crisis. They did not find the difference between the profitability of two systems to be statistically different, though Islamic banks performed better than their conventional counterpart. Chazi and Syed (2010) have identified that Islamic banks have comparatively better risk management than conventional banks. Ouerghi (2014) also studied the impact of financial crisis and also conducted a post-crisis study on both banking systems to find that performance varies with the size of banks (Beck, Demirgà ¼Ã §-Kunt, Merrouche, 2013). Ouerghi (2014) also found that profitability, credit risk and efficiency of conventional banks was better than Islamic banks but large Islamic banks did better than large conventional banks. Similarly, Mobarek Kalonov (2014) provided empirical evidence, using two frontier approaches, from many OIC countries to compare Islamic and conventional banking. They found that though conventional banks more efficient in their operations, Islamic banks had an upper hand when it came to financial stability. Their extensive study covered pre-crisis and crisis periods. The finding of Mobarek Kalonov (2014) is validated by an earlier study conducted by Al-Hares, AbuGhazaleh, El-Galfy (2013) in which they studied banks from 2003-2011. Microsoft Accounting Strategy - 1073 Words
Microsoftââ¬â¢s Financial Reporting Strategy The case at hand is primarily to discuss the financial reporting strategy adopted by Microsoft Inc. for the period 1996-1999 and the subsequent litigation that arose out of the accounting practice followed by Microsoft. Microsoftââ¬â¢s primary operations has been developing and manufacturing of the software products. As a company, it has shown a very stable growth in terms of revenues and profits, thus enabling better than industry share price increase over more than a decade (1986-1999). With respect to the primary operation of software development and the task to financial reporting the two areas that were required to be established were ââ¬â a) Treatment of Software Development costs. b) Revenueâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hence since the ââ¬Å"technical feasibilityâ⬠could be justified either ways using discretion, Microsoft chose to indicate that a larger proportion of the costs were incurred prior to establishing technical feasibility and hence the other costs related to the development are not materially significant, hence the entire costs is shown as expense. Thus using the justification that technological feasibility of product occurred sufficiently late in the development process and useful life of the product is short-lived, Microsoft was able to argue in favor of not ââ¬Å"capitalizingâ⬠the costs and expensing them instead and use this for reporting higher expenses (and thus lower profits). b) The argument for Microsoft deferring to recognize a part of revenue at the point of sales was that say when a customer is buying software in 1996, they re also buying the right to upgrades and customer support in 1997 and 1998. Hence a part of the sales needs to be considered as ââ¬Å"Unearned revenueâ⬠. However the real reason for stashing a huge reserved as ââ¬Å"Unearned revenueâ⬠appears to be meeting revenue and profit guidance. Microsoft has been the dominant player in the IT sector and hence it was able to stash enough reserves over good quarters by keeping a part of its sales as ââ¬Å"Unearned revenueâ⬠that it could easily tide over a few bad quarters. The below graph gives a pictorialShow MoreRelatedFinancial Reporting Strategy1442 Words à |à 6 Pages Microsoftââ¬â¢s Financial Reporting Strategy 1. Rekkr looked up from the ground, breaking from his train of thought. The village was in sight; though that was no statement. It was on fire, and anyone with the gift of vision could see the smoke from miles away. The screaming from the village made the warriors sweat, but their leader commanded patience. He turned slowly and faced his pack of warriors. For once, his party found comfort in his masked face, for he could show no sign of fear. Pointing a gloved hand at the back portion of the group, he swept his hand in front of him and jerked his thumb at the burning village they were trying to get to. Some options within these core subjects include the following: History could be World History or U.S. History. Science includes Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with an Ecological focus or Biology with a Molecular focus. Math has a Level 1 and Level 2 test. Language Subject Tests may or may not have a Listening component. Here's the complete list: English Literature Math Level 1 Math Level 2 U.S. History World History Biology Ecological Biology Molecular Physics Chemistry French French with Listening Spanish Spanish with Listening Italian Modern Hebrew Latin German German with Listening Chinese with Listening Korean with Listening Japanese with Listening Let's look at a brief overview of some of the differences in format: Biology E and Biology M share 60 core questions. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese have only Listening options, and the remaining have only non-Listening options. Now that you have a sense of the differences among the subject tests, let's move onto the next important question. Should you take them to apply to college? Why Take SAT Subject Tests? Are you wondering, "Should I take SAT Subject Tests?" To answer your question, you should take Subject Tests if your college requires or recommends them as part of your application. Make sure you know not only how many Subject Tests your college wants, but also if they have a requirement or suggestion for which subjects you should take. Technology-oriented colleges, for example, may prefer to see that you've taken math and science tests. MIT and CalTech actually require one math and one science Subject Test. MIT lets you take Math Level 1 or Level 2, while CalTech requires Level 2. Selective liberal arts colleges often want to see a range of knowledge across academic domains, such as a math test paired with a literature or history test. Some colleges may allow Subject Test scores to make up for a low general SAT score. Still others may use these tests for placement purposes, such as into a more advanced level of a language, once you arrive on campus. At Harvard, for example, 700 or better on a language test will waive its language requirement and allow you to choose among more advanced language courses. You may also be applying to a school that has adopted a test flexible policy, like Colby College, Colorado College, Middlebury, and NYU. The school may let you send SAT Subject Test scores in place of the general SAT or ACT, if you feel these tests better represent your strengths and abilities. Check out the full list of test optional and flexible schools here. Subject Tests can really strengthen your application, as they allow you to feature a particular strength, knowledge of a subject, and academic interest. If you speak another language, the language tests are a great way to showcase your skills. As colleges are increasingly seeking to establish a multicultural class of students with global competencies, they will consider your ability to communicate in another language to be a strong and desirable asset to your candidacy. How Do You Know If Subject Tests Are Required? We've gathered a list of all the colleges that require SAT Subject Tests. A small group of colleges, like Amherst, Brown, Duke, and Vassar, among others, will waive the SAT Subject Test requirement if you opt for the ACT. Since policies are continually changing, especially as schools become more and more flexible, make sure to double check your colleges' standardized testing requirements by researching their admissions website or speaking to an admissions officer directly. Finally, you may elect to take the Subject Tests even if they're not required, if you want to demonstrate a particular strength to the admissions committee. This may especially be the case if the Subject Test connects to your future academic and/or professional goals. If you're excited to study Engineering, for example, you may be eager to showcase your math and science skills. The list of colleges mentioned above indicates if a college does not require, but will consider SAT Subject Tests are part of your application. Ithaca, Smith, Wesleyan, to name a few, consider, but don't require, the SAT Subject Tests. When Are the Subject Tests Offered? The Subject Tests are offered on all the same dates as the general SAT except for March - in January, May, June, October, November, and December. The science, math, literature, and math Subject Tests are offered on all these dates. The language tests are offered on some, but not all, of the dates. Some have more options, but Listening tests - German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean - are only offered in November. Check out this chart of the exact dates of all the Subject Tests. It will also help you figure out your best schedule for taking the Subject Tests in and around the general SAT or ACT and all your other activities and obligations. You can take up to 3 Subject Tests in one day (with some conditions), so you can take them all together or choose to spread them out over different dates. The best time to take a Subject Test is often near the end of the school year in which you've been studying that subject and may also be studying for a final or AP exam. You don't have to wait until junior year, but instead should take the Subject Tests whenever you are ready and the content is fresh in your mind.
